Who cooks for you, who cooks for you-all?

I spotted this owl on the way to church one Sunday morning last year. I don't think I ever posted this picture. I stuck my camera out of the sunroof of the car and he sat still and posed for me. I think he is a Barred Owl, according to the Audubon Bird Guide of Eastern Land Birds.

Sometimes I sit on my front porch and watch the Pileated Woodpeckers and Red-headed Woodpeckers. Daddy used to call the large woodpeckers Indian hens. They are plentiful in the rotten pines, I guess they make their nest there.

Of course, Dothan likes to bird-watch too.  The mockingbirds and blue jays swoop down and run him off.
He's really a scaredy cat.

I saw a pair of pretty Bluebirds at the camp last week.

We see lots of these herons on the river, also. They scoop down and catch fish!

I used to see lots of colorful birds when I was growing up, but I never see these anymore. I don't think the songbirds are as plentiful as they were in the 1950's and 60's.

"Do you hear the lonesome whip-poor-will?
I started out to do a post about food, but I couldn't do it. One of my patrons at my library took her own life Wednesday night. She said she was tired of being in so much pain all the time. She was a nurse, about my age. Her dad is our Sheriff.  A life lost too soon. We don't know why, but someday we will.

Love, from me and Wilma

I love your pictures! I love to bird watch as well, right from my own yard. I rarely can manage to get any really good photos, though. I am glad you chose this instead of food! I really enjoyed it. Why don't you and Wilma come visit me and Bear over at my blog? I think Wilma would like it!
Blessings,
Susie

I enjoyed the photos in your post, however I am sorry for the loss of your patron. Life is so fragile, and we never really know what someone is going through. Thanks for sharing.

I know, sometimes it is just so shocking though.

What beautiful bird photos, Dorothy especially the owl! Very sad that people feel they have to end their lives, but pain is a big problem for so many. Thanks for sharing. xxoo Nancy

Thanks Nancy. What you got growing in your garden now? I think I'll pop over and check it out.

Dear Dorothy, That is indeed a barred owl in your first photo, and a darn good photo it is, if you just snapped that out your car window! (If you look at my blog and type in AWARE and Arabia Mountain, you can find the photo of a barred owl there!)
I am so sorry for the woman who took her own life. Life can be so very difficult for people. May her soul rest in peace.
Love,
Kay

Hi Kay,
Yes, that is my owl pic, I couldn't believe he didn't fly away! None of the other bird pics are mine, though! I haven't seen an oriole in years. And I can't get close up enough for the woodpeckers. I might get some shots this week-end of the herons.

It's so hard to understand sometimes how someone can give up on life, I just hope I was nice to her whenever I saw her in the library. Makes you stop and think about things like that. I hope she has found peace.

So sorry to hear about your patron. It's always so sad to hear. You just never know what's going on in people's lives.

I did enjoy your bird pictures--we get very similar birds here and they always make me so happy. I still have never seen a bluebird. I don't think our woody area draws them in.
