Rolling Store

Can you imagine only shopping from a "Rolling Store"?
The rolling store was the only means of shopping for my grandmother during the week
out in the country where she lived.

There is an excellent article about rolling stores at this site:

And they bartered for goods, usually a chicken or a bucket of homemade syrup exchanged for something she needed.

From Pinterest

Here is another store in "town" where my family lived when grandmother was young.

Sometimes, grandpa would take them to town, and my mother and her brothers would get to see the movies at this theater.

Mom and her brother Rufus

Later on, they all moved away to bigger cities, and life became more convenient in the 60's.

Uncle "Rufus" passed away last week,
gone on to heaven to be with grandmother and grandpa.
He will be missed by his five brothers and two sisters he left behind here on earth.

I don't know why, but life always seems like it was more fun, looking backwards.

On another note,
My friend Jane from Jane's Jewels blog is leaving blogging.
I will miss her sense of humor, her beautiful photography and her wonderful personality very much.

Keep on the sunny side,
Dorothy and Ms.Wilma

I grew up in a small town with a nice downtown..Main Street. I sure enjoyed spending the day in town or going to the drugstore with girlfriends after school. It brings back good memories. It was a different way to shop....now we're online shopping!

I know, it is convenient to shop online, but it still seems like life was more fun then. Whenever I see something on eBay or etsy now that is from the 50's or 60's, they refer to it as "midcentury".
Gosh, I feel old as Methuselah! =D

I'm sorry to hear about your Uncle.

You know, I never think about what it was like back then.

That's the way it's supposed to be, Ramona. Not looking back over already plowed fields.

Sorry to hear about your uncle's death. He certainly was a dashing young man, and your Mom such a pretty young woman!

Knowing what I do know from my grandparents' and parents' accounts, I don't think their lives were more fun - they worked a lot harder and had a lot less free time and money on their hands as we do today, and I am most grateful for having hot running water without having to chop wood and carry heavy sacks of coal, and for my washing mashine and steam iron and fridge and central heating. My life is a lot of fun - work being part of it :-)

Oh lord, you are right, Meike! It was just more fun to me because I was a kid and didn't have to do all that hard work. My mom grew up having to pick cotton all day long in the heat of the south! We are blessed!

What a great picture of your mom and uncle. Sorry to hear of his passing. It's always fun to look back at those old photos. I sometimes wonder how they managed back then.

What a wonderful post! I had ten uncles and I loved everyone of them. Great memories...I wish we could go backin time it seemed that we had more family time together......and I believe women should be able to afford to be stay at home moms so they can teach their children good values. Working hours should be six hour shifts...five days week. There could be three shifts That gives three different people a job for each shift. Respectfully people should make more money per hour reguardless of what kind of work they do, every job needs to be done or it wouldn't exist. There is enough money in this world... it is greed that ruins everything.
Oops I didn't mean to go there it just seems like an unfair world for some of the real working people.
One thing I believe was that people did have more family time together back then.
